On Facebook the other day, I saw a large number of people complaining about the Coca-Cola commercial "America the Beautiful" still. Even though the Superbowl is now long gone, people are STILL talking about the commercial put out by the soda company. I can't even count the number of posts I saw that said something related to "This is America, we speak ENGLISH here!"
                I can't even understand the people that believe this idea that only English speaking individuals can be American's and "belong" in this country. I have a really hard time having pride in my country when so many people are hateful and close-minded. I think that if everyone at least tried to keep an open mind, we could all learn to love each other.

In the article "My Daughters Have No Mother" written by Max Mutchnick, the co-creator of the hit television show "Will and Grace", tells of his experiences and opinions about his children growing up with no mother. Mutchnick is a gay man, and together along with his partner have daughters that they were able to have using a surrogate mother. He also tells that he does not consider the surrogate an actual mother, but more like an "oven".

The author talks about how it is difficult to raise a child in an environment as such, seeing as it is not "typical". Society's view on this controversy is difficult on the family every day, especially for the children. Most of the opposition comes from people that believe that a child does not receive the correct kind of emotional and gender development that a child raised in a more typical environment would.

I disagree with any opposition to the two men raising children because of their genders. Now, if it was found that they weren't providing a stable home for them, then I would have a problem. However, I do not think they should be judged on their relationship with each other, but rather the relationship with their children.

On Sunday, January 26th, Disney channel took a large risk in introducing the first openly gay couple on it's show Good Luck Charlie. This episode features two lesbian moms, Susan and Cheryl. When the network was asked about the decision to include this couple on the show, they replied stating that it was a good move on their part and that it promotes diversity for children and young adults to see.

I for one, am thrilled to see this happen. It is really great that Disney channel is taking a step forward in LGBT rights and acceptance. Children and young adults watching this will be able to see that it is normal and something to expect to see in our society today.

Almost shockingly, though, the media has not been in uproar about this. Generally, when homosexuality is presented to people (especially the younger generation) people become upset about it being show to their kids. Most people who have been asked about this particular couple on the Disney show have said, however, that they believe that it is perfectly okay for such a couple to be on a Disney channel show.

All of this being said, it is really so wonderful to know that the Disney channel is taking a step in the right direction for equality.
